AI tools add up fast in Australia: a subscription or two, a bank fee on top, maybe an automation tool and a server. The good news is you can pay less for AI without giving up the tools. Here are 10 ways to cut the bill, each with a full guide behind it, priced in Australian dollars.
Short answer: the biggest savings usually come from picking a cheaper plan (ChatGPT Go is A$13 a month against A$30 for Plus), paying yearly where you can, switching to a card with no international transaction fee, and claiming the work share at tax time. If you automate things, the platform you pick can matter even more than the AI subscription.

The 10 ways at a glance

Way to pay less Example saving
1. Pick the cheapest plan that does the job A$17 a month: ChatGPT Go instead of Plus
2. Pay yearly where you can A$68 a year on Claude Pro
3. Count what’s bundled in Depends on what you already pay for
4. Stop paying bank fees About A$12.60 a year per A$30 subscription
5. Know where GST fits 10%, if your business shouldn’t be charged it
6. Claim the work share on tax About A$69 on a A$360 subscription
7. Cut your API tokens Up to 95% off repeated input
8. Automate on a cheaper platform About A$58 a month on a small workflow
9. Self-host n8n About A$25 a month against n8n Cloud
10. Pick a cheaper server About A$5.50 a month on a 2 GB server

1. Pick the cheapest plan that does the job

If you mostly use AI to reword emails or answer quick questions, you may not need the full plan. ChatGPT Go is A$13 a month against A$30 for ChatGPT Plus, though OpenAI notes that Go may include ads. Google AI Plus is A$7.99 a month. Claude has no budget plan between its Free and Pro plans. Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus vs Google AI Pro compares every tier.

2. Pay yearly where you can

Claude Pro is A$34 a month or A$340 a year, about A$28.33 a month, which saves A$68 over twelve monthly payments. ChatGPT Plus doesn’t offer a yearly plan. Only commit for a year once you know you’ll keep using it.

3. Count what’s bundled in

Google AI Pro is A$32.99 a month, but it includes 5 TB of Google storage and YouTube Premium Lite. If you’d pay for those anyway, the AI part costs much less than it looks. The same goes for AI that comes with software you already have, so check before you add a second subscription.

4. Stop paying bank fees

The big four banks charge 3% to 3.5% on most card purchases processed overseas, even when you pay in Australian dollars. On ChatGPT Plus that’s up to A$12.60 a year, and more on US-dollar bills. A card or account with no international transaction fee fixes it. How to pay for ChatGPT and Claude without bank fees shows which banks charge what.

5. Know where GST fits

Overseas AI companies have to charge Australian consumers 10% GST, and some prices include it while others don’t. If your business is registered for GST, give the supplier your ABN and they shouldn’t charge GST at all. Does ChatGPT charge GST in Australia? covers each company.

6. Claim the work share on tax

If you pay for an AI subscription yourself and use it for work, you can usually claim the work-use share. Paying A$360 a year at 60% work use is a A$216 claim, which cuts your tax by about A$69 in the 30% bracket. 7. Cut your API tokens

If you build with AI through an API, you pay per token, and your ChatGPT subscription doesn’t cover it. Three habits help: use the cheapest model that does the job, keep long unchanging instructions at the start of the prompt so they’re cached (cached input on Claude Sonnet 5.5 is 95% cheaper), and cap the length of answers, since output costs 5 to 8 times as much as input. 8. Automate on a cheaper platform

Automation tools charge in very different ways. For a small four-step workflow running 600 times a month, Zapier costs A$71.46 a month billed yearly, while Make (affiliate link) costs A$12.90. Make vs n8n vs Zapier works through two examples.

9. Self-host n8n

n8n’s Community edition is free to run on your own server, with no limit on workflow runs. That’s what I do: my server costs about A$6.57 a month and also runs this blog and Bob, my chat assistant for ServiceNow documentation. n8n Cloud’s Starter plan is about A$32.21 a month billed yearly. The catch is that you look after the server yourself. Self-hosted n8n vs n8n Cloud covers what’s involved.

10. Pick a cheaper server

If you self-host, server prices vary a lot. In Australia, BinaryLane’s 2 GB server is A$10.78 a month with GST, against about A$16.30 for Vultr’s once GST and a bank fee are added. If your data doesn’t need to stay here, overseas hosts like RackNerd (affiliate link) cost less again. Cheapest VPS in Australia for AI tools compares them.

Where to start

  • You pay for one AI subscription: check you’re on the right plan (way 1), then fix the bank fee (way 4).
  • You use AI for work: add tax (way 6) and GST (way 5).
  • You build or automate things: ways 7 to 10 will save you the most.
