If you want to run n8n, a chat front-end or a small AI bot on your own server, where that server sits matters. A VPS in Sydney or Melbourne responds faster from Australia and keeps your data here. Here’s the cheapest VPS in Australia from each of the main providers, priced in Australian dollars, plus the costs the US-dollar price tags leave out.
Short answer: the cheapest Australian VPS I found is BinaryLane: A$5.39 a month for 1 GB of memory, or A$10.78 for 2 GB, GST included and billed in Australian dollars. The big overseas providers with Sydney data centres (Vultr, Akamai, DigitalOcean and AWS Lightsail) start at about A$7 to A$10 a month for 1 GB, before GST and bank fees.

Cheapest VPS in Australia: the prices side by side

Provider Australian locations 1 GB 2 GB 4 GB
BinaryLane Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide A$5.39 A$10.78 A$21.56
Vultr Sydney, Melbourne US$5 (A$7.16) US$10 (A$14.32) US$20 (A$28.64)
Akamai (Linode) Sydney, Melbourne US$5 (A$7.16) US$12 (A$17.18) US$24 (A$34.36)
DigitalOcean Sydney US$6 (A$8.59) US$12 (A$17.18) US$24 (A$34.36)
AWS Lightsail Sydney US$7 (A$10.02) US$12 (A$17.18) US$24 (A$34.36)
Monthly prices for each provider’s cheapest standard plan at that memory size, checked from an Australian connection on 21 October 2026. BinaryLane lists A$4.90, A$9.80 and A$19.60 before GST; the table adds 10% GST. US dollars are converted at the Reserve Bank rate for 20 October 2026 (US$1 = A$1.4318). CPU cores and disk sizes differ a little between providers, so check each plan’s details.
A few things the table doesn’t show:
  • Vultr says prices can differ by data centre location, and its control panel shows the exact price when you deploy.
  • DigitalOcean also has a 512 MB plan for US$4 (A$5.73) a month, but that’s very little memory for AI tools.
  • AWS Lightsail charges the same in Sydney, but Sydney plans come with half the monthly data transfer allowance of most other regions. Its small plans include 2 vCPUs.
  • Akamai charges more in some regions (Jakarta and São Paulo), but Sydney and Melbourne get its standard prices.
  • OVHcloud lists a Sydney VPS with 4 GB of memory from A$6.29 a month before GST, on a 12-month commitment. When I checked, its Sydney location showed as out of stock, so it’s not in the table.

What the US-dollar price tags leave out

The overseas providers list their prices without GST, and overseas companies have to charge Australian consumers 10% GST (see Does ChatGPT charge GST in Australia?). Your bank may also add an international transaction fee of 3% to 3.5% (see How to pay without bank fees).
Example: Vultr’s 2 GB plan is US$10 a month, about A$14.32. Add 10% GST and it’s A$15.75. If your bank adds 3.5%, that’s about A$16.30. BinaryLane’s 2 GB plan is A$10.78 with GST, and because BinaryLane is an Australian company billing in Australian dollars, an international transaction fee shouldn’t apply.

How much server do AI tools need?

Most AI tools you’d self-host don’t run the AI model themselves. n8n, chat front-ends and bots send your requests to an AI provider’s API, so a small server handles them fine, and you pay the AI provider separately per token (see AI Token Pricing Explained). Running an AI model on the server itself is a different matter: that needs far more memory than any plan in the table.
n8n’s hosting docs don’t list minimum specs. As a rule of thumb, 1 GB is the bare minimum, and 2 GB or more gives you room for n8n plus a database or another tool. My own server has 5 GB of memory and runs n8n and this blog together. It also runs Bob, my chat assistant for ServiceNow documentation.

Don’t need Australia? Overseas is cheaper still

If your workflows run in the background and your data doesn’t have to stay here, a budget overseas host costs less. My own server is with RackNerd, which has no Australian data centre. Its 2 GB VPS special (affiliate link) is US$35.99 a year, about A$4.29 a month, billed yearly in US dollars. When I checked, that special was only offered in US data centres: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and Seattle. Self-hosted n8n vs n8n Cloud covers what running your own server involves.

Which should you choose?

  • Cheapest in Australia, billed in AUD: BinaryLane. It also has the most Australian locations, including Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.
  • Want a big platform with extras like managed databases, one-click apps and lots of tutorials: Vultr, Akamai, DigitalOcean or Lightsail, all with Sydney data centres.
  • Data has to stay in Australia: any provider in the table, as long as you pick an Australian location.
  • Lowest cost and Australia doesn’t matter: a budget overseas host like RackNerd.

FAQ

What’s the cheapest VPS in Australia?

Of the providers I checked, BinaryLane, at A$5.39 a month with GST for 1 GB of memory. For 2 GB, BinaryLane is A$10.78 and Vultr is US$10 (about A$14.32) before GST.

Which VPS providers have a Sydney data centre?

All five in the table: BinaryLane, Vultr, Akamai, DigitalOcean and AWS Lightsail. BinaryLane, Vultr and Akamai also have Melbourne, and BinaryLane adds Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

Do overseas VPS providers charge GST?

Overseas companies have to charge Australian consumers 10% GST on digital services. Check the total at checkout. If you’re registered for GST, give them your ABN.

Can I run AI models on a cheap VPS?

Not well. Small servers are for tools that call an AI provider’s API, like n8n. Running a model on the server itself needs much more memory than these plans offer.

How is BinaryLane billed?

BinaryLane bills by the hour, in arrears, in Australian dollars. Its listed prices exclude GST.
