ChatGPT Plus costs A$30 a month in Australia. But if your bank treats the payment as an overseas transaction, it can add a ChatGPT international transaction fee of 3% to 3.5%, even though you paid in Australian dollars. The same goes for Claude, Google AI and most other AI tools. Here’s why it happens, what it costs, and how to pay for AI without bank fees.
Short answer: the big four banks charge 3% to 3.5% on most card purchases processed overseas, and that can include purchases in Australian dollars. On ChatGPT Plus, that’s about A$0.90 to A$1.05 a month. To avoid it, pay with a card or account that doesn’t charge international transaction fees, then check your next statement to make sure.

Why you can pay a ChatGPT international transaction fee in Australian dollars

Banks don’t just look at the currency. They look at where the business, or the company processing its card payments, is located. NAB charges its fee on transactions “processed outside of Australia, or in a foreign currency”, and says that can include Australian-dollar purchases, even on some .com.au websites. CommBank and Westpac’s credit card pages say much the same.
OpenAI now bills Australians in Australian dollars (its multi-currency billing page lists AUD), and Anthropic quotes Claude prices in AUD with GST included. That takes currency conversion out of the picture, but not necessarily the fee. Neither company’s billing help pages say where card payments are processed, so you can’t tell in advance whether your bank will treat them as overseas.

What the big four banks charge

Bank and card International transaction fee Charged on AUD purchases from overseas businesses?
CommBank debit card (Smart Access) 3.5% Yes. CommBank lists purchases “in Australian dollars at an overseas merchant”
CommBank credit cards 3.5% on most cards Yes, for AUD purchases with an overseas connection, including online
NAB Visa Debit and most credit cards 3.5% Yes, if the business or its payment processor is outside Australia
Westpac Choice debit card 3% Westpac’s fee table only mentions foreign-currency purchases. Ask Westpac about AUD ones
Westpac credit cards 3% on most cards Yes, “in any currency” when the business or processor is outside Australia
ANZ Plus card 3% It can, for transactions processed overseas, even if you’re in Australia

Monthly prices from each company’s Australian pricing page, checked 10 October 2026 for Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus vs Google AI Pro. The fee only applies if your bank treats the charge as overseas.
Bills in US dollars or euros cost a bit more. That includes API credits (see AI Token Pricing Explained), most cheap servers and n8n Cloud (see Self-hosted n8n vs n8n Cloud). Your bank converts the amount at its own exchange rate, then adds the fee. A US$20 API top-up is about A$28.76 at the Reserve Bank rate for 15 October 2026, and a 3.5% fee adds about A$1.01, on top of any margin built into your bank’s exchange rate.

How to check if you’re paying it

  • Look at your next charge in your banking app. The fee often shows as a separate line next to the purchase, called something like “international transaction fee” or “foreign transaction fee”.
  • If it’s there once, expect it every time. The same company will usually be processed the same way each billing period.
  • Check every AI charge, not just one. Different companies process payments in different places, so one may attract the fee and another may not.

How to pay for AI without bank fees

1. Use a card or account with no international transaction fee. Several Australian banks say they don’t charge one on purchases:
Account or card What the bank says
Up 0% international transaction fees, online or in-store. Uses Mastercard’s exchange rate with no markup. No monthly fee
ING Orange Everyday No ING international transaction fees since 15 October 2025, with no monthly conditions to meet
Macquarie transaction account $0 Macquarie international transaction fees on overseas purchases, including online. Uses Mastercard’s exchange rate
NAB Platinum Visa Debit No international transaction fee on overseas purchases (cash withdrawals still cost 3.5%)
Some credit cards don’t charge one either, so check your card’s fee schedule. You don’t have to move all your banking: a simple option is to open a no-fee account and put just your subscriptions on its card.
2. Check your phone’s app store. If you subscribe inside the ChatGPT or Claude app on an iPhone, Apple bills you, and Apple’s terms name Apple Pty Limited as the provider for Australian users. Apple also says some purchases are sold by its companies in Ireland or Singapore, so this isn’t guaranteed to avoid the fee. Compare the in-app price with the website first. And note that Anthropic doesn’t issue invoices for app-store subscriptions, which matters if you claim GST credits (see Does ChatGPT charge GST in Australia?).
3. For US-dollar and euro bills, let your card do the conversion. Pay in the currency the business bills in. Macquarie warns that if you let a merchant convert the price to Australian dollars, it may cost you more. Multi-currency accounts such as Wise are another option: Wise says spending a currency you already hold is free, and charges a conversion fee if you don’t.

Is it worth switching?

For one A$30 subscription, the fee is about a dollar a month, so it’s not worth losing sleep over. It adds up when you pay for two or three AI tools, top up API credits in US dollars, or pay for servers and other tools billed from overseas. Then it’s tens of dollars a year for nothing, and moving your subscriptions to a no-fee card is a one-off job.
The fine print: this is general information, not financial advice. Fees change, so check the bank’s own fee page before you switch, and think about whether an account suits your situation. There are no affiliate links in this post, and no bank pays me to mention it.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT charge in Australian dollars?

Yes. OpenAI’s multi-currency billing page lists AUD for Australia, and ChatGPT Plus is A$30 a month. If you subscribed before that, OpenAI says you stay on your current currency; to switch, you cancel and subscribe again after your billing period ends.

Why is my ChatGPT charge more than A$30?

The two usual suspects are your bank’s international transaction fee, which shows as its own line on your statement, and GST. Does ChatGPT charge GST in Australia? explains the GST side.

Does Claude charge an international transaction fee?

The fee comes from your bank, not from Anthropic, and the same rules apply as for ChatGPT. Claude Pro is A$34 a month with GST included.

Does paying yearly avoid the fee?

No. The fee is a percentage, so you pay it on the yearly charge instead. Yearly billing can still save money on the subscription itself: Claude Pro is A$340 a year, against A$408 for twelve monthly payments.

Do Up, ING or Macquarie charge fees on AI subscriptions?

All three say they don’t charge international transaction fees, including on online purchases. Check their fee pages for any other fees that apply to you.
